Something you and I have in common, Peter, is that we both lost our mothers when we were around nine years old. I lost mine to what was likely schizophrenia. She stopped “seeing” me; I don’t think I was real to her at all. I raised myself. One of the reasons I lost interest in the idea of becoming a mother myself is because I grew up thinking that a mother was someone who just sat in a corner all day, staring vacantly at nothing. When I became old enough to visit friends, I was astonished that their mothers had personalities and interacted with them. Your mother actually talks to you? Amazing! I’ve spent my life being envious of people who had mothers who gave them advice and love.

I turned all of my nurturing instincts to being a kitty mom (I’m great at that).

I’m glad you had the love of a mother, Peter, and you have my sympathy and understanding that you lost her at such a vulnerable age. Please remember, you are valued and loved by others!
